BuzzPill:

The Automatic Pill Dispenser

Background

There are countless people around the world who need to take medications. However, busy schedules cause people to forget to take their medications. This can be a potentially fatal mistake so my group sought to find a solution.

our solution

To solve this issue, my team decided to combine the effectiveness of an alarm clock and convenience of a pill box to make sure people don't forget to take their pills.

How it works

The BuzzPill has an Arduino detect the time of day with an RTC module. At the specified time and day, the BuzzPill will open a trapdoor under the fixed pillbox which will cause the pills inside to fall to the funnel placed below it. The funnel directs the pills into a cup placed under the funnel. While the pill is being released, a loud alarm will go off.

This causes the user to make sure they turn it off. However, to prevent them from just hitting a snooze button, our team implemented a fool proof mechanism that will force the user to take the pill. The only way to turn off the alarm is to have the user press a button and pick up the cup at the same time. Only then will the alarm turn off.

This causes the user to use both of their hands to turn off the alarm. Once the alarm is turned off, the user is expected to have the pills in their hands and that they take their medications.

*Note: the video shows the BuzzPill run through the entire pillbox before the alarm gets triggered. This is simply for demonstration purposes.
